Flagstaff Area ATV Club Minutes – June 11, 2023

17 members were present. The meeting was brought to order at 10:00 a.m. by President Edie Dunlap with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Presidents Report:  Edie Dunlap, breezy1@tdstelme.net

If anyone wants to buy or help sell the tickets for the Lobster Raffle please let Edie Dunlap know (207-431-0922) and they will also be available at all our meetings.

The club usually sells Strawberry Shortcakes and water at Family Fun Days. Unfortunately the members that usually do it are not going to be available this year as the date of Family Fun Days was changed to August 4th and not the last weekend in June. Hope to do it again next year.

Our application for Directors and Officers Liability Insurance was submitted and approved. The cost is $475.00 a year and this along with the $550.00 we paid for the regular club landowner’s liability policy will be refunded at 90% from the state as part of our grant.

A grant for $85,970 and was submitted and approved for $80,000 which means we will have $72,000 available for use. Sounds like a lot but this year we have to have $25,000 available for our part of the rebuild of Brochu Bridge and we just received a bill of $19,500 from Wagner for our share of 2 bridge repairs/replace, Beaver control and grading on 3 different road sections. We are waiting for a bill from Thorndike for rebuilding the trail going from Sawyer Brook Road to the Indian Land. The rental of the excavator and skid steer will be around $15,000. That brings us up to about $60,000 for expenses and does not count the material we need for the trail repairs and the cost of fuel. If we need more we can apply to the state for more money and if they have it available they can consider amending our grant for additional money.

The dates for our club rides are – Saturday July 15th for our ride to the Red Onion in Rangeley, Saturday August 19 to Tim Pond and Saturday September 30th for a cookout at Natanis Campground. Like last year, we will order off the menu at Red Onion, we will be having Chicken Stew with biscuits at Tim Pond and Hamburgers/Hotdogs at Natanis.

Gloria and Edie attended a meeting about Franklin County having a National Wildlife Refuge in this area. It is still in the planning stage so the group presenting were looking for input. It would really have a negative impact on the ATV trails in our area as that is not something they usually allow on that land.

Vice President: Sandi Isgro, sandi.whitewolf@gmail.com

Sandi is was unable to be at the meeting but asked if the club would entertain a motion to make a donation again this year for her program of Upcycle the Bicycles to purchase flowers, mulch, etc. to go in the baskets of the bikes around town. The members voted to donate $100.00 for the project.

Trail Master’s Report: Dale Dunlap, breezy1@tdstelme.net

Dale and Fred have been very busy this last month. The heavy rains did quite a bit of damage that needed to be fixed. There was a 350’ gully about 4 feet deep in places out back of Flagstaff General that Fred was able to fill in. Fred and Dale worked on part of the trail to Rangeley that had a culvert washed out and half the road washed away. Brochu Bridge was redecked where needed and a bridge on Split Rock was also redecked the week before trails opened. Thank you to the volunteers that stepped up to help on those projects.

After the trails were open they started on yearly maintenance and any other minor washouts. Rocks were removed and drainage done on a section of trail from Stratton to Rangeley.

The section of trail from Sawyer Brook Road to the Indian Land was widen, rocks removed and ditched.

Fred is working on Rock Hill and headed up to Tim Pass for regular maintenance on those trails.

Dale has been installing sign posts at intersections of our trails to make it easier for Gloria and Edie to sign without having to put several stakes up.

Gloria and Edie have about 80% of the trails signed and should have it finished up once the rain lets up some.

In another couple of weeks Fred and Dale will be going back up to finish checking on the last section for a possible trail to Natanis Campground.

Gordon Murphy won the door prize and Bob Dennett won the 50/50 which he donated back to the club.

Meeting adjourned at 11:00 am.

                                                      .

Our next meeting will be on July  9th. Our meeting will be at 10:00 am at the Stratton Community Building.
