Flagstaff Area ATV Club Minutes – September 13, 2020

19 members were present. The meeting was brought to order at 10:00 a.m. by President Edie Dunlap with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Presidents Report:  Edie Dunlap,  breezy1@tdstelme.net

Thank you to Jeff and Jen for allowing us to have our meeting here again this month.

We received a thank you card from Adrien Brochu’s family for the $400 donation we put in the box on Quill Hill.

We had a good day for our ride into Tim Pond Camps. A total of 36 people enjoyed the trip and the great lunch of hamburgers, hotdogs, salad, drink and dessert.

The signs for the Penobscot Indian Land we bought were put up and were very much appreciated by the landowners. The signs state “Now entering Penobscot Indian Territory, This trail closes September 1st for the season” it has Flagstaff ATV Club on the bottom of it.

We picked up a clothes order from Logo Logic in Bingham and had them at the meeting for anyone interested in buying some. We did order some of the clothes in a forest green as well as the gray and maroon we have had. Will try to get some pictures on the Facebook site as well as update the website as soon as I can.

Gloria and I have sent in the second round of our grant, the total was $51,540.24. Added to our first submission of $35,384.34 makes a total of $86,924.58. We were given a grant for $71,529.86 so we are already over that amount. Most of our expenses left are jobs that Jim Brochu is doing for us plus grading for Wagner. Brian Bronson will try to work with us for more money if needed.

We have renewed our insurance with V & V Insurance but it will only be valid until the end of May as the current underwriter for V & V will no longer be doing the policies for landowners/rentals liability. V & V are looking at some new underwriters that will give us the liability policies that we need for the landowners and rental equipment.

Because of not knowing if we will be able to rent equipment next year (depending on liability insurance) the boys kept the excavator for an extra month this year (3 months). This enabled them to get on all of our trails and do the work that was needed done by a bigger machine than ours. If we cannot rent the excavator next year the work we did with it this last month will make it easier to maintain the trails with the backhoes.

As most of you know our Carrabassett Trail is closed because of the closure of the Carrabassett Trails. I did receive a call from a reporter from the Lewiston Sun Journal and made a couple of statements. The reporter had asked why we closed our trail and I told her that we did not want riders to ride all the way down our trail only to find they could not continue to Carrabassett. We would hope no one would do that and but did not want to take a chance as it would only make it harder on the whole situation. There are a lot of combined issues going on and we hope things will get worked out and all the trails will be able to open up again by next year.

The ATV that Sandi donated to the club around 2014 has started to develop issues that need to be repaired. Fuel leaking, carburation, brakes needing repairs and needs a battery. It has not been used in the past few years. Rather than putting a lot of money into the machine (1993 Polaris Magnum 325), Sandi suggested we put it up for sale, as is, to club members and then use the money towards our trail system. We would like to get around $500 /or best offer  for it so if any club member is interested please give me a call or send me an e-mail/message within the next 2 weeks of this meeting with your offer.

Because of COVID 19 and no ATV Banquet this year the state was not able to recognize the members of clubs who put in 40 or more hours of labor hours in 2019 (last year). We felt that they still deserved to be recognized so the club purchased a couple of items that were passed out to members who were at the meeting and will be sent to those that were not. We had 15 members that worked over 40 hours – Fred Smith, Dale Dunlap, Bruce Wyman, Gloria Smith, Cassandra Smith, Mike Smith, Ben Wyman, Edie Dunlap, Burchard Jackman, Joe Marcoux, Cameron Soiett, Kayden Soiett, Lee Morin, Darren Soiett, and Chris Currier. There were also 24 other members that had volunteer hours on the trails as well. Thank you to all.

We had a discussion for our landowner’s gifts this year and decided on getting them some nice pens and pocket tablets with our insignia on them.

Three years ago AFM presented us with a map of over 100 places that need to be fixed. All but the ones from the Wind Towers to Natanis have been fixed along with many more on Wagner, Weyerhauser and Penobscot Indian Land. One of the things I heard from Fred and Dale was by the time this year was over they wanted to have been on all the trails on our system that are still currently open and fix them so they will just have minor maintenance to do on them after this year. With the help of all our club members, whether it was working on the trails, donating time or supplies, joining our club, voting on issues that we needed done, attending a meeting and just being there with a thank you and job well done this goal has been reached.  Thank you to each and every one of you for your support.

Our club ride to Kennebago Lookout with picnic will be on Saturday September 26th, rain date for October 3rd. We will leave Johnny’s Parking Lot at 9:30. Please let me know if you want to go so we can order what we need for hamburgers and hotdogs – 632-2920. This year we will be furnishing the Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips (in individual bags) and a choice of potato and macaroni salads that will be put up in individual containers. We would like to have anyone that would like to bring a dessert to share to either wrap them individual or put in small baggies. Please bring your own drinks and chair as well. If you have any questions please give me a call.

At this time the Moose Trail Connection in Carrabassett is now closed but there is negotiations on going with Saddleback Mountain for a trails going through there which would give us a connection back on that part of the trail.

Fred finished working on Tim Pass then over to Canyon Trail to fix a washout. He then went back to Brochu Bridge for some repairs on that trail before finishing up with pulling rocks and getting rid of water on John’s Road. The excavator was returned to New Hampshire on August 24th

Projects that Jim Brochu will be finishing up is grading from Brochu Bridge to Route 16, work with Wagner on replacing washed out culverts with a bridge instead of putting more culverts on Tim Pass and finishing up the work on the Carrabassett Trail to Plum Creek Road.

Our next meeting is Sunday, October 11th, 2020 at 10:00. We hope that the Community Building will be available then but if not we will be able to have it at the Stratton Plaza again.  Please check either Facebook or the website to see where the meeting will be held.
