Flagstaff Area ATV Club Minutes – May 19, 2019

27 members and guest were present. Meeting was brought to order at 10:00 a.m. by President Edie Dunlap with the pledge of allegiance.

Presidents Report:  Edie Dunlap, breezy1@tdstelme.net

  • Thank you letter from FABA.
  • Our Facebook has been a great tool for getting out information on our trail opening/closing. People can share the post with others in different areas and groups to reach a lot of people that may not belong to our club but still need the information we put on.
  • We talked last month about having Xmas in November party for our last meeting. Thinking maybe we could have a pot luck brunch and then gift exchange or maybe Yankee swap.
  • We have some dates for our Club Rides. Sarge’s were not able to schedule a date that would work for us so will be going to the Red Onion on July 20th. Ride to Tim Pond will be on August 24th. Our foliage ride/cookout will be Sept. 28th with a rain date of October 5th.
  • Have not heard back from Life Flight yet so will table that for now.
  • I have some information on how the ATV Safety Class works now.
  • The bill in the Legislature for increase in registration was passed and will take effect this year. ATV registration will now be $45.00, increase of $12. This increase will put about $800,000 a year in the trail maintenance fund. Non-residents 7 day pass will be $75.00 (an increase of $22) and a year is $90 (an increase of $22). $10 from each non-resident registration will go into the ATV Enforcement Fund.
  • There is a Executive Order to establish a Governor’s Task Force for ATV Trail Initiatives They are looking at how best to address the social, economic, legal and environmental problems caused by certain ATV operations. I have copies of the executive order to pass around if anyone would like to see it.
  • Have 4 Donation Boxes for trail work that will be put out today. Pines Market, Flagstaff Fuel, White Wolf and Tea Pond.
  • Would like to hear your thoughts on the coffee mug for a landowner appreciation gift this year. The price of the cup (with our logo and thank you on it) is 10.00 and includes a mailing box for them. We would need  50 of them for a cost of $500.00. We do receive $500 from the state for Landowner Relations. Motion made and Carried.
  • Dale and I went to Rangeley for a meeting at Boss Power Equipment with Jacob from Boss, Lee Libby Trail master of Rangeley’s Snowmobile Club and Gary Williamson the Oquossoc ATV Club Trail master. We were all in agreement that work needed to be done on the trails in order to keep the Rangeley Trails open. Jacob has a customer who owns a construction company and is willing to do whatever he can to help. It was decided that he could do the work needed on the section of trail from the Park ‘n & Ride across from Sarge’s to where the trail crosses Route 16 headed back towards Stratton/Eustis. That would be the Depot Road and CMP pole line. The bridge on that section is being rebuilt this summer also. Oquossoc Club has a rock rake and said they would do the trail from there to where it crosses back over Route 16. Our Club will start there and go to Quill Hill pulling in the corners and rock raking. We are waiting for an estimate from Jim Brochu to do the section from where our trail comes out on Quill Hill Road back to Route 16 towards Canyon Trail. That last section was the only part Lee said that was bad for them with all the rocks and rough sections. It was a good meeting and plan to have another one in a couple of months to keep the lines of communication open.
  • We have been working on the Municipal Grant. So far we are up to $48,359.36 and still have 2 estimates for work needing to be done that I am waiting for. Will be going to the Selectman’s meeting on Tuesday night for ask them to sign our paperwork for the grant. It has to be in to the State on the 31st. It has been a little tough trying to estimate when we have not been able to get out on the trails at all but have done the best we can.
  • We have the Lobster Raffle tickets to sell. We have 150 of them and the Lions Club has 150. It is a good money maker as we make $750.00 for the club if we sell them all. It will be drawn at Family Fun Days on June 29th. Anyone that wants to buy some or take some to sell please see me after the meeting.

 Secretary Report:  Elaine Marcoux, erm@myfairpoint.net

Trail Master:   Dale Dunlap, breezy2@tdstelme.net

  • Per the Landowner’s the Trails will remain closed until at least May 31st. Hoping with some hot sunny days and wind the trails will dry out by then.
  • Once we can get out on the trails we will be setting up some work parties.
  • The bridge that the snowmobile club fixed on Billion Pines land has partly washed out again with the heavy rains and snow melt. I will be talking to Jim Brochu as he talked to the landowner last year about rebuilding that bridge this year.
  • Jim Brochu told me that AFM has hired him to build a road from intersection #17 (just beyond the old salt shed) down to Brochu’s Bridge as they will be cutting in there this year. Not sure how or when it is going to affect our use of the trail yet.
  • The snowmobile club is getting Tiff money to fix Cappy’s Bridge this year and a RTP grant for Brochu’s Bridge.
  • We have also bought another brush saw for working on the trails.
  • I will be ordering some safety vests for work crews to use on the trails

Next Monthly meeting is June 9  at the Town Community Hall in Stratton at 10:00 a.m
