Don Plante, President's Report

Meeting opened at 10:00am with 17 people in attendance including "Jake".

Don read the mail that included a notice from ATV Maine; it is as follows:

ATV Public Service Announcement to be pulled…

Most of you have probably seen the ads running concerning ATV's and forest fires.  Thanks to President-Jim Lane's fast work and calls to National Off Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC), National ATV Association (NATVA), Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC) and Recreational Motor Sports (RMS) the pressure was on the below are the results.

The Ad Council, Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters have pulled a controversial Smokey Bear ATV Public Service Announcement at the urging of off-road groups, including the Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC), according to the Blue Ribbon Coalition press release.
The Forest Service has asked all media outlets to discontinue the airing of the ad, which implied that the proper way for motorized receationists to prevent wildfires is for them to load up their vehicles and go home.
Don Amador, western representative for the Blue Ribbon Coalition, said the agencies had the right intentions, but the message was misleading.
"I honestly believe the agencies had intended to create a positive message regarding safe use of OHV's on public lands," he said in the release.  However, the (Public Service Announcement) incorrectly conveyed to the ATV rider that the best way for them to prevent wildfires was to stay at home.  Instead, the ad should have encouraged the use of USDA Forest Service-approved spark arrestors and limiting travel to approved routes and areas.
"BRC thanks the agencies for listening to our collective concerns about this ad and for taking the responsible course of action by canceling the campaign.  It is our hope the Ad Council and Forest Service consult with their trail recreation experts and the OHV community before launching another motorized recreation ad."

We also had a letter from FABA thanking us for our donation for Family Fun Days.

The Club voted to sponsor a flag from FABA for a cost of $35.

Don called Tim Pond Wilderness Camps to confirm a total that 26 people will attend the dinner on August 16th.  It will be a "go" rain or shine.  If the weather is bad anyone wishing to drive their vehicles into the camps may do so.  Riders will gather at the Parking Lot in Eustis for departure no later than 3 p.m..  Billy has requested we arrive by 5 p.m. for a 5:30 p.m. serving.  Any questions you may call Don at 246-5946 or Dick at 246-3201.

In consideration of his dedication and prompt attention to our website needs, the Club has voted to send a check for $100 to Jay Hanna, our faithful webmaster.  Ruthanne speaks often of her gratitude to him, Thank you Jay!

Don also asked for a motion to give the town a check for $50 to help with the costs of the copy machine.  A motion was made and seconded.

A Trail Safety issue was also addressed.  It has been recommended to look into chaps, pants and any other needs to keep our trailmaster safe.  In the event of a mishap, insurance could be an issue.  We will look into it and report at the next meeting.

Sandi Isgro, Vice President's Report

Sandi was not present at the meeting.

Bob Dennett, Treasurer's Report

Bob gave our totals and said he was going to pay a few bills.  He also suggested that the club pick up $10 for each person going to the dinner.  A motion was made and seconded.  Thank you Bob, Great idea!
