President's Notes

Don opened the meeting at 10:00am welcoming all attending.  Don told us that the FABA dues are going up to $100.00 per year.  The club agrees that we want to continue our membership so a motion was made and passed to remain members and pay the increased amount.  Pine Tree Society sent us a letter asking if anyone is interested in purchasing greeting cards.  The town of Eustis is in need of a new stove and hood for the Community Building.  The town has received a grant from FEMA for a generator.  In case of an emergency the Community Building is the shelter for the town. They are looking for donations to help cover the costs of a 10-burner, 2 oven gas range.  They have applied for a grant from the Maine Community Foundation.  We have paid rent through the year for use of the building and will not be using it in November and December, so the members made a motion and passed it to donate the 2 months of rent (instead of receiving a refund) and additional money equal to a $150.00 donation from us.  We received a letter from ATV Maine's Richard Barter who is stepping down from his position.  Richard said he has enjoyed all the nice people he has met and is looking forward to having more time for riding and having fun.  On Sunday, October 7th the Flagstaff Club took a ride up to Tim Pond Camp and had a wonderful time.  The food, company and ride were great!  They had 11 ATV's and 14 people.  The toy ride was a huge success.  They lost count at 425 machines.  A motion was made and passed to keep all the officers of the club in position with the exception of the secretary's position as Nancy Hanson is stepping down this year. Kern's Inn will be reopening November 1st as Eustis Village Inn.  The next meeting will be the second Sunday in March 2008

Trail Master's Notes
September 12th, Ruthanne and Dick went up to Split Rock to check a rumor that it was closed by trees and found that it was.  The logger had put some trees in the trail.  Dick thought they would remove them by the weekend.  As it turns out they did not remove the trees.  Dick contacted the forester and had them removed.  September 14th, Ruthanne and Dick picked up and delivered planks and moved them to the Black Nubble Bridge site.  September 16th, Ruthanne and Dick built a bridge on the end of Eustis Ridge Road that connects to the Split Rock Trail.  This is for the convenience and safety of the ridge residents.  September 17th, Don and Dick moved telephone poles from behind the Irving Station to the route 16-bridge site for the snowmobile club.  September 19th, Dick gathered rocks to fill some of the bad holes on the McCarthy Hill Connector.  September 21st, Dick explored a possible loop off the Natanis Trail for next year.  September 24th, Dick did further exploration of that loop and he made the trail connection off the power line on the 3rd leg of the CV trail. September 29th, Don and Dick cleared and signed Split Rock Trail.  It seems this trail takes a lot of maintenance because of blow downs and the logging that's been going on there.  October 1st, Dick took the dump trailer out to McCarthy Hill Connector.  He hauled some more rocks and one load of gravel.  Dick talked to the Wagner forester and he gave us permission to use and sign the Tim Spur Loop.  Another 4 miles added to the trail system.  October 4th, Don and Dick picked up the trailer in Turner.  October 5th, Dick replaced a broken plank on 1st Bridge on the 2nd leg of the CV Trail. Dick rode to the end of Lake Trail and signed and drained some large water holes.  October 9th, Dick took the dump trailer out to the McCarthy Hill Connector and hauled a couple of loads of gravel into the trail. October 10th, Dick went to Carrabassett Valley and started clearing trail to Houston Brook.  Two Carrabassett Snow Mobile Club members showed up and they did about 100+ yards in 7 hours.  There are 1425 yards of very difficult trail to clear, plus an 80' bridge before the snow comes.  October 12th, Don and Dick went out to Black Nubble Bridge site and prepared it for planking.
We can be very pleased with the accomplishments of this season.  We now have 18 more miles of trail, 16 bridges and boardwalks, 14 box culverts, and 5 flexible water bars that were put into the trail system this year.  This was all done with the help of Ray Charest, Pete Manter, Phil Hill, Lee Morin, Neal Blaney and last but very far from least our president Don Plante and Membership Chairperson Ruthanne Smith.  Also many thanks to Randall Erskine for his excellent operating of the excavator and his road building skills.  The rewards for our labor are 165 miles of trails that many people rave about and say how much they enjoy them and our system, and how they appreciate how hard we are working on them.  I am looking forward to expanding our trails and making the connection to Carrabassett and Kingfield become a reality.  The Natanis Trail north of Bugeye at the Route 27 crossover will be closed October 26th.  Alder Stream was closed as of September 1st. All other trails are open but subject to closure if the mud gets bad.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00am
