Trail Master Report: Edie Dunlap, breezy1@tdstelme.net

  • Brochu’s Bridge has been closed after an inspection by the company that is going to do repairs as they do not feel it is safe for travel of any kind on it right now. Cappy’s Bridge was also found to not be safe for crossing by snowmobiles/groomer. The bridge near Quill Hill on Billion Pines property has also been checked and will need to be fixed before the groomer can go over that as well. The landowners are taking out the permits needed to fix them and there will be several companies working together to get this done. Not sure if we will be sharing cost with the snowmobile club and state for the repairs of them at this point. Will know more by our next meeting. Butler Brook Trail is closed to ATV traffic from Monday-Fridays as they are logging in that area. We are allowed to use the trails on Saturday and Sundays.
  • 2 Culverts have been added to the trail by the Beaver Dam where the water was crossing the road. Bridge was also had a ramp added to the side that was washing out some. That is on the Swamp Trail near Rabbit Hollow.
  • Good progress on the Natanis Trail. 5 new bridges were built, one culvert was put back in the ground, 2 more culverts were installed as well as draining and water bars. Brian Bronson brought up lumber for the bridges and was able to get the money for it without taking it out of our grant. A lot more work will need to be done to get down to Rt 27 but was good headway for this year.
  • Removed a lot of old culverts from the woods on various trails. Some we were able to use and the rest went to Absolute to be put into scrap metal.
  • Dug up culvert & reset it where our trail crosses Rt. 16 near the transfer station. Also fixed the washout in further on that trail.
  • Drained waterholes on the Scott Road.
  • Went back into the Old Boneyard and removed culvert, hayed the opening on the lower end with closure signs and put rocks up on the upper end to close that trail.
  • J L Brochu completed two projects for us. He has done the Carrabassett Trail from the IP Road to the Plum Creek end. The state will be doing the work on the boardwalk/bridges on that small section. Had a couple of brushing parties on the Plum Creek Road to enable him to get through easier with the big excavator to do the water bars. They also fixed the “sand hill” which is on the Butler Brook Trail where it crosses the Scott Road. Rocks were put at the bottom on the hill to a 65” wide opening. Last weekend they were moved by someone to make the opening wider.  More rocks were replanted there this week.
  • Spent a few hours GPSing a possible new trail on Antler Hill to bypass one of the issues AFM had with part of the trail. (Explain and picture).
  • I had a conversation with the snowmobile club with any concerns they had with AFM moving us onto their trail going up to Natanis. We have agreed to have someone from their club ride the trail during the summer and let us know of any issues that may be starting to happen that could cause damage to the trail and we will go in to fix it before it gets worse. Working together will help both clubs. The section by Bug Eye is very wet and Brian Bronson has got a plan for what needs to be done there to keep the area dryer. Will be getting estimates for the work and will do that next spring.
  • Sincere Thanks to Joe Marcoux for being our Trail master and doing an amazing job for all these years. Joe will be our new Trail Leader on Club rides and continues to help on our trails. Our new Trail master will be Dale Dunlap and Assistant will be Fred Smith, thank you for volunteering to help keep the club going and our landowners happy.

Next and Final Meeting will be November 11, 2018 at 10:00 at the town hall.
