Flagstaff Area ATV Club Minutes – July 12, 2020

17 members were present. The meeting was brought to order at 10:00 a.m. by President Edie Dunlap with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Presidents Report:  Edie Dunlap,  breezy1@tdstelme.net

Jeff and Jen where thanked for allowing us to have our meeting at the Stratton Plaza today.

We received a letter from Pine Tree Camp thanking us for our donation of $300.00 in memory of Adrien Brochu.

The total of donations made in Joe Gallants memory is now $1195.00

The first round of grant reimbursement will be sent to the state this week. That will total $35,384.34 and we should receive $24,769.04 back from the state.

The date for the club’s ride and lunch at Tim Pond Camps is Saturday August 15th. We will have more details at the next meeting and the starting time that we will leave from Johnny’s parking lot.

A sign was placed at Johnny’s parking lot with his permission. It states ‘Flagstaff ATV Club Park n Ride Compliments of Pines Market’. Right now it is a foam board sign but will be replaced with a sign from York signs that can be put up at the beginning of the season and taken down when the trails close. There will also be one across from Flagstaff Fuel that will read ‘Flagstaff ATV Club Park n Ride’ but will have an arrow directing people to Quincy’s field for parking. If too many park at the gas station it sometimes makes it hard for the big trucks to swing around out back after getting diesel.

Logo Logic in Bingham said they are able to get what they need for clothing right now without a long wait. An order for some club clothing will be done this month. If anyone wants something specific please give me a call at 431-0922 or send me an e-mail.

After our last meeting I did return an e-mail to Brent West asking for something in writing that would protect our ATV Trails in their grant application for the Maine Forest Legacy Program.  When we received that we would send them our letter of support. I did not hear anything back from them so did not send the letter of support.

Family Fun Days has been re-scheduled for the first weekend of August. (August 1st) Right now they are still planning on doing vendors and stuff for a Family Fun Day celebration but there will be no parade. I would like to know if we have anyone willing to help with setting up the same tents as last year with strawberry shortcakes and dough boys providing those will be offered. Instead of a day operation it will be more of afternoon and evening with fireworks at the end of the night. They would like vendors to be set up and ready to go at 4pm. There is a show planned from 4:30 to 5:30, then a singer from 6 to 8:30ish followed by fireworks. Vendors can stay set up as long as they want to. The club voted to do the Strawberry Shortcakes and will check with Jeff and Linda about the dough boys & fries.

It looks like we may need to use the excavator for another month depending on what we end up doing with the Carrabassett Trail. We are working on a re-route now. Have been over part of it with a gps but still need to make a connection of around 1,500 feet to complete it.

Vice President: Sandi Isgro, sandi.whitewolf@gmail.com

Maps are out for the Moose Trail. New ones will be done next year. Talks are still continuing with Saddleback Mountain on a connection to complete the Moose Loop once again.

Several trails around Houston Brook have been closed. There is a bill in the legislature to close 55 thousand acres affecting ATVs, Snowmobiles, hiking and Sugarloaf Touring Center. We will try to find out more about this.

The new signs are up for the Entering and Leaving Flagstaff ATV Club Trails. We also ordered signs for both ends of the Indian Land that says you are entering Penobscot Indian Territory and the trail closes on September 1st for the season.

We drained water holes, filled them with gravel and rock raked the trail from Eustis Ridge Road to Gravel Pit Road.

We started on Butler Brook Trail draining, ditching and installing culverts. Brian Bronson brought up the state’s bull dozer for us to use to remove the boardwalk and push the hill down to fill in the area. Have ditched it but still need to go back and hay everything. We also went to the bridge that was near the intersection of the Bradbury trail. The snowmobile club had started to use that last winter and had put a culvert on the end of the small bridge to make it wide enough for the groomer. We removed the culvert and extended the width of the bridge to accommodate the wider trail.

We fixed the trail from Elephant Head all the way through the Indian Land to the Pole Line. We will be starting on the rest of the trail to the gravel pits just before Tea Pond this week.

We bought 3 mats from the mat place in North New Portland to use on bridges as they were selling them for $200 each. Jim Brochu picked them up and brought them up for us.

We had another major washout on the Tim Pond Trail which was the same place two culverts washed out last year on Wagner Land. Wagner’s forester wanted to see it so we fixed it enough for ATV’s to get through. Wagner has decided it would better to replace the culverts with a bridge. They are going to furnish the cement abutments for the footing of the bridge and we will top it with one of the mats we bought.

We have several places we need to return to for haying. If anyone could volunteer to help out with this during the week could you let me know after the meeting? We can haul the hay with our dump trailer to the sites which will make it easier. Thank you.

Our next meeting is Sunday, August 9th, 2020 at 10:00. We hope that the Community Building will be available then but if not we will be able to have it at the Stratton Plaza again.  Please check either Facebook or the website to see where the meeting will be held.
